Getting a job

The rules and age limit are different in every state for getting a job. Click here if you want to find out the age limit for your state. If you are under the age limit to get a job in your state, then you work by going around the neighborhood asking if anyone wants anything done for them or if your family wants anything done, for example, gardening, dog walking, vacuuming or anything else they want to be done. But once you are above this age limit you can go and work at a cafe, bakery, grocery store etcetera. And once you work for an employer lots more things start to happen: you can start investing into your superannuation account (talked about in my previous vlog) and after earning a specific amount per year (in Australia 2019 if you are earning over $18,200 per year) you will have to start paying tax. I have realized that most of my vlogs are talking about things that will happen after you get a job and start earning some more money, so I have decided to talk about the process of getting a job.

Number 1

You have to make a resume. A resume is a document that underlines your qualifications, experience, achievements and general things about you, like your age, school, name, address etcetera. You use a resume to tell the employer about yourself, employers use it to make the decision on whether you will get an interview or not. I have an example below.

Number 2

Find out what your bank details are. If you go onto your bank's app and sign in then you will be able to see your bank account when you tap on it, you will be able to see the BSB and account number.

Number 3

Work out your availability. Look at your family calendar to see what is on and when and when there isn’t anything on then that will be the time where you could do some work. Write these times down to send to your employer.

Number 4

Actually find out whether anyone is hiring. Look on your suburb’s Facebook group to see if anyone has put any notices on it. Look in the newspaper to see who is hiring or look on notice boards or street poles to see if anything has been stuck on there about people hiring.

Number 5

Contact them to see if they are still hiring. There would most likely be a phone number or email address on the notice. You want to email them your resume, what you want to do/what work you would like to do and your availability to hopefully get an interview or have a chat on the phone to tell them about you to hopefully get an interview.

Number 6

Fingers crossed you get an interview or get the job if you don’t get either repeat from step 4.

Number 7

Go to the interview and hope you get the job.

Number 8

Either you celebrate because you got the job or you repeat from step 4 because you didn’t get it.
